There are a few projects underway which are related to what I’m trying to achieve here. Some more, some less. This page provides links and short summaries:
The Freedom Box – Co-founded by Eben Moglen, this project marries special open-source software and some small hardware which plugs right into your router. All communications are encrypted, providing access to the Internet while shutting out prying eyes.
Unhosted.org – A project which aims at creating web-apps that don’t need server-side storage. Basically, apps that don’t store any of your data on remote servers (unless it’s your own). Mainly geared towards developers, of course.
Redecentralize – Our goal is to get decentralized products into the hands of billions. We help build the communities and networks needed to make that happen.
